The Waitaki Tourism Association (WTA) has reached a pivotal moment in its history, prompting a
critical evaluation of its role and relevance within the local community. In a heartfelt message to
members and the broader tourism business community, the WTA committee acknowledged the
challenges faced over the past year, citing difficulties in maintaining engagement and delivering value.
The small committee, comprised of just four members, has worked for over a year to find solutions to
reinvigorate the association. Despite their efforts, the WTA committee acknowledges that the
association has struggled to effectively represent and support its members, leading to the decision
not to invoice for membership fees this year.
Members and local businesses are now being asked a fundamental question: Does the Waitaki
Tourism Association continue to serve a purpose and remain relevant in the current landscape? The
committee is seeking input from the Waitaki Tourism Industry to determine the association’s future
course.
Two Possible Paths Forward:
1. Revitalization:
If the consensus is that the WTA remains vital, the committee urges members and local
businesses to actively participate in the rejuvenation of the association.
The call to action includes stepping up, becoming involved in the committee, and
collaborating to reshape the WTA into an organization that authentically represents and
supports the interests of its members.
2. Responsible Wind-Down:
Conversely, if stakeholders believe the WTA is no longer needed or relevant, the committee
proposes a responsible and orderly winding down of the association.
The WTA committee is eager to hear from its members and local businesses regarding their
perspectives on the association’s future. Responses to this critical question are requested by
